Dental Treatment in Turkey for British Patients

British patients make up the largest group of overseas visitors at most Turkish dental clinics, and clinics have adapted to how they travel: short trips built around annual leave, appointments arranged around flight times, and aftercare that has to work from a different country.

This page is about the specifically British considerations — records, follow-up with your own dentist, insurance, and the expectations people bring from the NHS and from private practice at home.

What British patients tend to need

The most common cases are similar: teeth that have been patched and repaired over decades and are now failing; failing crowns or bridges; missing teeth where a denture has become uncomfortable; and cosmetic work that was never affordable privately at UK prices.

Many patients arrive having been quoted a figure in Britain that made treatment unrealistic, or having been told that NHS options for the cosmetic element do not exist. That difference is the reason they travel, and it is worth being clear about it from the start so that expectations are set properly.

Records, and your dentist at home

Bring whatever records you have: recent x-rays if your dentist will provide them, a list of your medication, and anything you know about previous treatment — implants already placed, root canals, crowns. Where things have been done before, the details matter.

Tell your own dentist you are having treatment abroad. Most are willing to handle straightforward aftercare, and a treatment summary from the clinic makes that much easier. Where your NHS dentist is not able to help with work carried out privately abroad, a review appointment privately is usually inexpensive.

  • Ask the clinic for a written summary of treatment and materials before you leave.
  • Register the work with your own dentist when you get home.
  • Keep your plan and any guarantee terms in a safe place.

Not sure which treatment applies to you? A coordinator will go through it with you.

Insurance, time off and practicalities

Standard travel insurance normally covers illness and accidents abroad but excludes planned dental treatment. Declare your trip honestly to your insurer, and check whether complications from elective treatment are covered. If your treatment includes sedation or surgery, mention it.

Plan the time off generously. A week for crowns is usually enough; implant surgery deserves a few days of quiet afterwards, and a second trip later in the year. Patients who try to compress treatment into a long weekend tend to find the experience stressful.

Talking to someone who deals with UK patients daily

Our coordinators answer questions about flights, dates, UK bank transfers, and what to tell your own dentist. None of it is unusual for them — it is most of what they do.

★Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Treatment in Turkey for British Patients: questions patients ask

Will my NHS dentist help if something goes wrong?

NHS dentists can treat problems and provide urgent care, but they are not obliged to maintain or replace work carried out privately abroad. Most will review you and help with straightforward issues.

Can I pay from a UK bank account?

Yes. Bank transfer and card payments are both accepted, and you will be given details and terms in writing. See booking and payment.

How long should I take off work?

A week for crowns or veneers; a week for implant surgery with a further few days of light duties; and a shorter second trip for the final teeth.

Do I need to tell my doctor?

If you take medication for a chronic condition, or have a heart condition, diabetes or a bleeding disorder, yes — and tell the clinic, who will advise whether treatment should be modified.

Is the paperwork in English?

Consultations, consent and your written plan are in English. Read more about English-speaking care in Turkey.

Can I claim anything back from my UK insurance?

Rarely for elective treatment abroad, though some private dental plans contribute. Check your policy before assuming either way.

How to read this page

SmileOver is a coordination service. We arrange consultations, written treatment plans, airport and clinic transfers, accommodation and aftercare contact for patients travelling from the UK and elsewhere.

Clinical care — diagnosis, treatment planning and the treatment itself — is provided by the independent dental clinic and its registered dentists in Turkey. SmileOver does not practise dentistry and does not decide which treatment you need.

Every page here is general information, not medical advice. Your dentist will assess your own teeth, and treatment varies between patients. No outcome is guaranteed and no treatment is suitable for everyone.
