★Porcelain Veneers

Veneers in Turkey

A veneer is a thin facing bonded to the front of a tooth. It changes colour, shape and symmetry rather than strength, which makes it a treatment for the teeth people see when you smile.

Veneers are also one of the treatments most often oversold. They remove enamel, they are not reversible, and they are the wrong answer for teeth with decay, gum disease or structural damage. This page sets out what veneers can and cannot do.

★The treatment

What veneers are, and what they are not

Porcelain veneers are custom-made facings, typically around half a millimetre thick, bonded to the front surface of the front teeth. They are used for discolouration that will not whiten, small chips, uneven edges, gaps between teeth and slightly rotated teeth.

Composite bonding is the alternative: resin built up directly on the tooth in one appointment, with less preparation and a lower cost, but it stains more easily and usually needs refreshing sooner. Some patients are better served by whitening and alignment than by veneers at all.

What veneers cannot do is fix a weak tooth or hide active problems. Decay, gum disease and heavy wear are treated first — putting porcelain over an unhealthy tooth only postpones the problem.

★Suitability

Who veneers may suit

  • Front teeth that are sound but discoloured, chipped or uneven in shape
  • Small gaps or slight rotations you would like closed or visually straightened
  • A smile line that needs balancing, where whitening alone will not be enough
  • Enamel in good condition, with healthy gums and no active decay
  • Realistic expectations — veneers change the front surface of the teeth, not your whole face

Worth knowing first: Veneers are not suitable for everyone. Actively decayed teeth, untreated gum disease, severely worn or heavily filled teeth and a habit of heavy grinding all affect the decision. Where a crown, an implant or orthodontics would give a better long-term result, we will recommend that instead, even where it earns us less.

★What it offers

What patients usually gain

  • A consistent colour and shape across the teeth people see most
  • Chips, small gaps and uneven edges smoothed out
  • Porcelain that resists staining better than composite bonding
  • Minimal preparation compared with crowns, where the case allows it
  • A design checked with you before the final veneers are bonded in place
★Balanced view

Risks and honest considerations

  • Preparation removes a thin layer of enamel and is not reversible. Once a tooth has a veneer, it will always need one.
  • Veneers can chip, debond or break under heavy biting or if you grind your teeth.
  • Teeth can feel sensitive in the days after preparation and fitting.
  • Heavy preparation leaves a tooth that needs a permanent restoration, which is why some deeply reduced cases need crowns instead.
  • Veneers do not change colour over time like natural teeth, so a single veneer next to a natural tooth can be difficult to match exactly.

No treatment is risk-free and no result can be guaranteed. Your dentist will go through what applies to you at your assessment.

★Step by step

The veneer process, step by step

  1. 1

    Assessment and smile review

Your dentist examines the teeth and gums, takes x-rays where needed and discusses what you want to change. Grinding, decay and gum health are checked before anything else is planned.

  2. 2

    Shade and shape planning

Shade, translucency and shape are chosen against your face and your other teeth, so the result belongs to you rather than looking like a set of samples.

  3. 3

    Preparation

Where needed, a thin layer of enamel is removed under local anaesthetic and impressions or digital scans are taken. Temporary facings may be fitted.

  4. 4

    Try-in and adjustment

The veneers are tried in before bonding, so you can see the shape and length and ask for changes while they can still be made.

  5. 5

    Bonding

Each veneer is bonded individually, with the bite checked afterwards. You leave able to eat and drink normally, avoiding very hard foods.

★Practical detail

Before, during, after and beyond

Before treatment

Photographs and a short description of what you dislike about your front teeth are enough for an initial view. A full assessment with x-rays confirms whether the teeth are healthy enough to carry veneers.

Tell us if you grind your teeth, if you have had orthodontic treatment, and whether you would consider whitening or alignment instead. A guard is often recommended where grinding is present.

During treatment

Preparation and bonding are done under local anaesthetic, across two or three appointments in one trip. Most of the appointment time is spent on shade, shape and fit rather than on the tooth itself.

You will see your veneers before they are bonded. That try-in stage is the point to say if the length or colour is not what you pictured.

Aftercare

Clean as normal with a soft brush and interdental cleaning, and avoid biting nails, pens or ice. If you grind, wear the guard we recommend.

Composite bonding can usually be repaired or refreshed locally if it chips. Porcelain veneers that chip usually need to be remade, so prevention matters, which is why we ask about grinding before fitting.

Recovery at a glance

There is no real downtime. Some patients notice mild sensitivity to cold for a few days after preparation, which settles.

Speaking and smiling can feel slightly unfamiliar at first while you get used to the new shape. That usually settles within a week or two.

★Pricing

What it costs and what is included

Veneer prices depend on how many teeth are involved, the material and how much preparation is needed. Because veneers are usually planned per tooth rather than as a package, we quote individually after assessment. Prices are starting prices and subject to your individual treatment plan; book a free consultation for an accurate quotation.

★Frequently Asked Questions

Veneers: common questions

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers commonly last around ten years and often longer with good care, though this depends on your bite, your habits and how well you look after them. Nothing guarantees a lifespan, and grinding is the most common reason veneers fail early.

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

They do not ruin healthy teeth, but they are permanent: some enamel is removed and the tooth will need a veneer from then on. The real risks come from over-preparation, which is why we would rather do less and decline cases where a veneer is not appropriate.

Are veneers better than crowns?

They do different jobs. Veneers cover the front surface of a sound tooth and preserve more of it. Crowns cover the whole tooth and are used when the tooth is weakened. Where the tooth is healthy, veneers usually preserve more structure; where it is compromised, a crown is the safer choice.

Will veneers look artificial?

They only look that way if the shade and length are wrong. Oversized, uniformly bright veneers come from the design choices made, not from the country of treatment. We match shade and shape to your face and let you see the result at the try-in stage before anything is bonded.

Can I whiten veneers later?

No. Whitening does not change porcelain. If you think you may want whiter teeth later, whiten your natural teeth first and choose the veneer shade afterwards, which is the order we plan in.
