Dental Treatment Abroad: UK Guides

Patients from Britain come to us with the same set of questions, and most of them are not clinical. How do I get there from my city? How does it compare with staying local? What do I tell my own dentist? How do I fit it around work?

This hub collects the guides written for UK patients specifically — travelling from individual cities, comparing Turkey with the UK and other countries, and the practicalities of returning home with new teeth.

Travelling from your own city

Departure airport matters more than most patients expect. Direct flights to Dalaman run from several UK airports in season, and the difference between a direct flight and a connection is usually a full day of your trip.

Our city guides cover the realistic routes from each departure point, typical journey times, and how the trip is arranged around the flights you can actually get.

Comparing treatment abroad with staying local

Treatment abroad is not automatically the better choice. It is a good fit where the work needed is substantial, the private quote at home is out of reach, and you can travel comfortably and keep up maintenance afterwards.

Where a single tooth needs replacing, or where ongoing gum treatment is needed, staying local is often simpler and safer. We would rather tell you that at the assessment stage than after you have booked flights.

  • Cost of the full course of treatment, including travel and loss of earnings.
  • Number of visits each route needs, and how long you wait between them.
  • Who provides your aftercare, at home and abroad.
  • How each route handles something that needs adjusting months later.

Not sure which treatment applies to you? A coordinator will go through it with you.

Coming home: aftercare and your own dentist

Tell your regular dentist what you are having done, and ask whether they are willing to help if something needs local attention afterwards. Most practices are, and it makes life easier if the question is asked before you travel rather than after.

Take a written record of the treatment and materials home with you. That document is what your dentist needs for your notes, and for any future work planned around what has been done.

Where to start

Start with the city guide that matches where you live, then the treatment pages for whatever your teeth actually need. If you would rather skip the reading, send photographs and a description and a coordinator will summarise your options in plain English.

★Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Treatment Abroad: UK Guides: questions patients ask

Is dental treatment abroad worth it for UK patients?

For substantial work that would otherwise be unaffordable privately, often yes. For single small treatments, staying local is frequently simpler. It depends on what you need and how easily you can travel.

Will my NHS dentist help with aftercare?

Many practices will see you for a review or a straightforward adjustment, but they are not obliged to and it varies. Ask your own dentist before you travel so you know where you stand.

How much time off work will I need?

Crowns and veneers usually fit around a working week away. Implant surgery needs about a week including a rest day, and a shorter second visit later.

Can I claim anything back from my UK insurer?

Rarely for elective treatment abroad. Check your policy or contact your insurer directly before assuming cover.

Which countries do UK patients travel to for dentistry?

Turkey, Hungary, Poland and Spain are the most common. Turkey is popular for larger restorative cases and full-arch work; see our comparison pages for the differences that actually matter.

How to read this page

SmileOver is a coordination service. We arrange consultations, written treatment plans, airport and clinic transfers, accommodation and aftercare contact for patients travelling from the UK and elsewhere.

Clinical care — diagnosis, treatment planning and the treatment itself — is provided by the independent dental clinic and its registered dentists in Turkey. SmileOver does not practise dentistry and does not decide which treatment you need.

Every page here is general information, not medical advice. Your dentist will assess your own teeth, and treatment varies between patients. No outcome is guaranteed and no treatment is suitable for everyone.
