Dental Crowns in Turkey

A crown covers a tooth that is too weak, broken or heavily filled to be repaired from the inside. It is the workhorse of restorative dentistry — unglamorous, but often the difference between keeping a tooth and losing it.

Several crown materials are in use, and the right one depends on where the tooth sits and how it is loaded. This page explains the types, when a crown is appropriate, and how it is planned and fitted for UK patients in Marmaris.

Visits needed

Usually one visit for crowns, two where a healing stage is needed

Time in Turkey

5 to 7 days for most crown cases

★The treatment

What a dental crown is, and which type you need

A crown is a cap cemented over a prepared tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. It is used after root canal treatment, on a cracked or badly worn tooth, and as the visible tooth on top of a dental implant.

The most common materials are zirconia, which is metal-free and strong; porcelain fused to metal, which is durable but can show a dark line at the gum as the years pass; and full metal, which is very hard-wearing but visible. Porcelain and ceramic options are also used on front teeth where appearance matters most.

At our Marmaris clinic, zirconia is our standard material. It is made in our own laboratory, so shade, shape and fit can be adjusted while you are still with us, and on the front teeth the material and shade are chosen around your face rather than a shade chart alone.

★Suitability

When a crown is usually recommended

  • A tooth has had root canal treatment and needs protecting from fracture
  • A large break, crack or cavity has left too little of the tooth to hold a filling
  • A heavily worn tooth has lost height and no longer bites properly
  • A dental implant needs its visible tooth
  • A bridge needs supporting teeth, or appearance needs rebuilding after years of wear

Worth knowing first: A crown is not always the right answer. Sometimes a filling, an onlay or root canal treatment is more appropriate, and sometimes the tooth cannot be saved at all and an extraction with an implant is the more honest route. We will tell you which of those applies to you, and where a crown would only buy time, we will say so.

★What it offers

What patients usually gain

  • A tooth that can be chewed on again rather than avoided
  • Protection for a tooth that has been weakened from the inside
  • An even, natural-looking shape and shade across the visible teeth
  • Metal-free zirconia that does not show a dark line at the gum
  • Laboratory work done in-house, so adjustments happen before you fly home
★Balanced view

Risks and honest considerations

  • Preparing a tooth for a crown removes some enamel, and that is permanent.
  • Crowns can chip, loosen or need replacing, usually after many years rather than months.
  • Sensitivity and sore gums around a newly fitted crown are common for a short period.
  • A well-made crown sits on a healthy root. Where the root or gum is compromised, the crown may not last as long as it should.
  • Crowns need the same cleaning as natural teeth, including the margins where the crown meets the gum.

No treatment is risk-free and no result can be guaranteed. Your dentist will go through what applies to you at your assessment.

★Step by step

The crown process, step by step

  1. 1

    Assessment and x-rays

Your dentist checks the tooth, its root and the surrounding gum, and takes x-rays to confirm the tooth is sound enough to carry a crown.

  2. 2

    Planning shade and shape

The shade, translucency and shape of the crown are chosen against your other teeth and your face, and confirmed with you before work starts.

  3. 3

    Preparing the tooth

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and a digital or physical impression is taken. A temporary crown protects it in the meantime.

  4. 4

    Laboratory work

The crown is designed and milled in our laboratory alongside the clinic. For more complex cases we build in a healing stage before the final fit.

  5. 5

    Fitting and bite check

The crown is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, then cemented. You will be asked to check how it feels before you leave the chair.

  6. 6

    Review

A short review before you return to the UK confirms the bite and margins have settled, and you leave with cleaning guidance.

★Practical detail

Before, during, after and beyond

Before treatment

Send photographs so we can see roughly what is needed before you travel, and bring or share any recent x-rays. Tell us about gum problems, grinding and previous dental work, because all three affect how crowns are planned.

Most crown patients need one trip of five to seven days. If a tooth needs root canal treatment or a healing period first, the plan is built around that rather than rushed.

During treatment

Preparation and fitting are done under local anaesthetic, usually across two or three visits: preparation, any adjustments, and fitting.

You are conscious throughout and can ask questions. Your coordinator is there to translate and to make sure you are clear on what is being done and why.

Aftercare

Crowns need brushing and interdental cleaning like natural teeth, with particular attention to the gum margin. Avoiding very hard foods such as ice and unpopped popcorn helps protect any restoration.

If you grind your teeth at night, a guard is usually recommended. If a crown feels high on the bite or the gum stays sore, tell your coordinator — both are usually correctable.

Recovery at a glance

Most patients return to normal eating within a day or two. Mild gum tenderness around a new crown is common and settles quickly.

Where several teeth are crowned at once, the first few days can feel odd while your bite settles. Adjustments are quick if something feels uneven.

★Pricing

What it costs and what is included

Crown prices depend on the number of teeth, the material and whether the tooth needs root canal treatment or a core build-up first. Our published 20 zirconia crown package starts at £3,199, and single crowns are quoted after assessment. Prices are starting prices and subject to your individual treatment plan.

★Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Crowns: common questions

How long do dental crowns last in Turkey?

It depends on the material, the tooth underneath and your own habits. Many well-made zirconia crowns serve patients for a decade or more, but no dentist can promise a lifespan, and grinding, gum disease and heavy use all shorten it.

Which crown material is best?

There is no single best material. Zirconia is strong and metal-free, which suits both front and back teeth. Porcelain fused to metal is hard-wearing and often cheaper but can show a dark margin over time. We recommend a material for your specific tooth rather than one for everyone.

Does having a crown hurt?

The tooth is anaesthetised, so the appointment itself should not be painful. Afterwards, some sensitivity or gum tenderness is normal for a few days, particularly if the gum was disturbed during preparation.

Can I get just one crown, or are the packages only for full sets?

Single crowns are treated at the clinic and quoted individually. Our published packages cover full-set cases because that is what most UK patients travel to us for, but they are not the only option.

What if a crown comes loose after I get home?

Contact your coordinator. A lost crown is usually a straightforward fix and it matters that it is refitted quickly to protect the tooth underneath. We will help you arrange a local appointment and give your dentist the details of what was fitted.
